Low hanging fruit: the foregone revenue of elective surgeries.

F ew treatments or procedures in veterinary medicine can be as shopped for as elective surgeries. Stories abound of receptionists fielding multiple “phone shoppers” per day, with potential clients inquiring about the costs of spays and neuters. As a result of this perceived competition, many hospitals have succumbed to downward pressure on the prices of these surgeries, in order to try to “win” these phone-shopping clients. At the same time, the inclusion of pre-operative blood work and intra-operative intravenous fluids has increased the value of these procedures. This combination of factors has led to a large number of hospitals surrendering potential revenue, as they attempt to offer low prices in tandem with high-quality surgical procedures to sway price sensitive pet owners. Examining the results of the 2014 Provincial Economic Surveys sheds light on how different provinces across the nation offer and charge for elective surgeries. For the purpose of this article, we will focus on canine spays. The results were quite similar for canine neuters and feline spays; however, feline neuters bucked the trends seen with the other elective surgeries. The cost of a dog spay is adjusted to the cost of living in each province to make the comparison valid across Canada. From province to province, the cost of a dog spay, adjusted for cost of living, varied widely, from a low of $263.13 to a high of $377.08. At first, it may be tempting to chalk this discrepancy up to differences in what is included with the surgery; certainly, a spay that incorporates pre-operative blood work and intra-operative IV fluids would be expected to be more costly than one that did not provide these benefits. To glean these distinctions, the Provincial Economic Surveys asked veterinary hospitals to indicate the price they charge for P eu de traitements ou interventions en médecine vétérinaire peuvent faire l’objet d’un magasinage autant que les chirurgies non urgentes. On devrait certes s’attendre
